SALUTE OUR VETERANS
MONTROSE BPW NEWSLETTER
OCTOBER-NOVEMBER 2008
Dear
Members and Friends,
I believe we can now say safely that summer is
gone, and so has most of autumn. It has been a personally
busy time for me, a very busy time for our club and
certainly an historic time for our nation. “Only in
America” has never had greater meaning than this morning,
November 5, 2008! I believe that no matter for whom you cast
your vote yesterday, we should all be very proud to be
Americans today.
Our next meeting is November 12th at
J&J’ Family Restaurant Montrose at 6:30 PM. Most of you are
already aware that we will be paying tribute to our own
member of the greatest generation, Evelyn Linaberry who
served in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) in World War II.
Evelyn is a bit nervous about all this hullabaloo, but we
are making arrangements for her to join us. If you haven’t
made your reservations, please contact me at
278-2482 or
cpts@epix.net as soon as possible to do so. Dinner cost
is $14.00 per person. I have received some reservations
from Evelyn’s friends..
November also is feed-a-friend month, so please
bring a nonperishable food item for the local food bank. We
also will be kicking off our ongoing project for the
Floating Hospital. This facility in New York City provides
healthcare for homeless infants and toddlers and their young
(mostly teen-age) mothers. Connie Stevens is the
coordinator for this project and she is asking for donations
of mittens, hats, socks and small stuffed animals.
These, too, can be brought to the meeting. We will be
setting up collection points for the Floating Hospital
around town. If you can offer some space in your business
or workplace please contact Connie. More information is
available at our website: www.bpwmontrose.org.
Our baked goods and lottery calendars sold very
well at the Elk Lake Bazaar on Nov 2nd. Thanks
to all who baked and all who worked. Our location in the
gym seemed to make a big difference this year.
While bingo was a good money-maker for us in the
summer, the last two outings have proven to be less than
we’d hoped in profits. Certainly the economy may be a
factor, plus beautiful fall weather entices people to enjoy
the outdoors before winter sets in. At any rate, we have
cancelled the last two Sunday bingos. Certainly we plan to
resume in the spring. We have also run into the common
problem of too little help. Four people are not enough to
carry out this type of event. Stay tuned, however, we will
be back.
We received a good report from the District
Director after our October meeting. Montrose BPW is like
the “Little Engine That Could”! She was amazed at how much
so few of us have accomplished.
The Executive Committee has approved a rewards
program to encourage members to participate in our
fund-raising and special events. Points worth $.50 each
will be awarded to members to be used in whatever capacity
they wish ( BPW Supply Store, conference or district
meetings, local dues). We are still working on the final
plan.
Some of our upcoming programs include Judy Kelly,
State Farm Insurance, who will discuss Financial Planning in
this Economy in December. We are also planning to have the
mobile hyperbaric chamber from Binghamton address new
treatments available in the home for open wounds such as
diabetic or venous stasis ulcers, and chronic infections.
Nonmembers are always invited to join us for the dinner and
program.
Please remember that we have 3-month holiday
lottery calendars on sale. They cover the evening number in
January-February and March. We still have many to sell
before the December 15th deadline. They make
great small gifts, stocking stuffers and birthday presents.
Each member is asked to sell at least 10 calendars or more.
They will be available at the November and December
meetings.
Susan, Joyce and Connie attended Fall Conference
at Keystone College in October. The meeting was
informative, as usual. BPW/PA has established its own
Foundation, in hopes of making more scholarships available
to Pennsylvania members.
I also want to let you all know that in January,
John and I will become “parents” (watch what you pray for).
We will be assuming custody of our 11 year-old grandson, JJ,
by mutual agreement of his mother and him. He will be
attending Elk Lake School and providing his grandparents
with the ongoing challenge of a preadolescent boy and all
that goes with it. Although this is not exactly what we had
planned for this time of our life, we are excited and more
than a bit nervous about this change in our life-style. I
hope you will wish our new family unit well.
I want now to take this opportunity to wish you
all a very happy Thanksgiving. As we enter into this
holiday season, let us all take time to offer thanks for the
bounty we share and the blessings bestowed upon us.
